Aurora moved through the ever busy city streets of NY with ease. Dodging tourists was almost like a personal game in the morning. How many people could she avoid bumping into because they were too busy being self involved and looking up at the endlessly tall buildings? She nearly had a heart attack when a skater just avoided bumping into her as she spilled her coffee away from her all white, halter dress with a daring plunging neckline. 'Really?! How does he even skate through all these people anyway?'
She turned down 5th avenue and saw her shop just fifty feet away. It was the same every time she made the corner. A huge swell of self accomplishment made her smile as she looked at the sign that read in very swirly black font, Face Magick. It was covered in ivy and white roses with fake fireflies that would cause the sign to glow from within. The revolving door was filled with women and their reluctant male company attempting to enter the store so Aurora made a quick turn into the alley for the back door. Pushing the gate open, she fumbled for her keys until the door flew open and Kayla came rushing out. "OH!"
Kayla jumped in surprise as well when she nearly ran into Aurora. "JESUS! Rori, you scared me to death!"
"Well, you certainly look good for a dead girl," Aurora replied with a smile. "Why are you out here?"
Kayla pulled a cigarette from her pocket and fumbled in her store supplied black waist apron to find a lighter. Aurora watched her friend with a smirk as the girl continued in defeat trying to find any bit of fire to light the cigarette. So simple it would be to light it for her, but that would be something she could never do nor would she ever. Aurora was adamant about her friend quitting and had immediately glamoured the poor girl into not seeing her lighter even though it was there, in the apron she was so desperately searching. "This unbelievable hag of a woman won't take my advice and buy the new deodorant you made last week."
Aurora rose one eyebrow and snatched the cigarette from her friend's hand. Kayla gave an annoyed sigh and she watched her friend and boss crush the life savior in her hand. "And why is this so life altering for you?"
"Because she smells like the homeless guy I pass every night on the subway back home!" She threw her hands in the air and onto her hips. "If you are going to force me back in there, at least let me smoke my cancer stick in the hopes of ending my life shortly before she comes back with another product she doesn't need before the jasmine deodorant!"
Tossing the crushed cigarette in the open dumpster, Aurora put her hand on the small of her friend's back and ushered her back inside the shop. Little did the girl know, the warlock was passing small waves of calming energy through her. "Ok, point out this insufferable hag."
Kayla looked over the sea of heads that filled the shop and finally pointed out the red-headed, stout woman who was definitely not from NY. She looked as if she had stepped out of the backwaters of a swamp. It was at that moment the woman had seen Kayla and came rushing through the crowd like a rhino to reach them. Aurora knew Kayla must not be exaggerating with the smell because people were looking back in disgust as the woman came charging their way.
"Glad to 'ave found ya!" the woman said with a southern twang. Aurora had been to many places in her life. Had smelled very foul people before, but THIS... This was something she couldn't find words for in any language she had ever learned. "This 'ere candle! Says it was made with zesty lemons and I hear some of yer products are edible. If I burn it, does that mean I can eat it?"
Aurora stared at the woman blankly and then grabbed one of the black wicker hand baskets the customers could use if they planned on buying a lot of items. She put her arm around the woman's shoulders and went straight to the soap aisle, piling in her most delicious smelling products. "Congratulations, Miss. You're our one millionth customer! All these items here are completely free! On the house!" Aurora moved to the next section and put in a few of the lotions, body sprays, and perfumes before ushering the woman to the front of the store where she saw her very rugged and backwater matching husband waiting at the door, picking his teeth.
"Earl! Earl, I won somethin'!" The woman slapped her husband on the butt as Aurora pushed them through the revolving door. "I can keep all this 'ere for free??"
"Yes! Congratulations! You have enough product to last for a year!" Aurora saw the revolving door was beginning to slow and gave it a little 'mental push' to get the couple on the move. "Have a great day!" When they reached the street, Aurora breathed in the sweet smells of her shop and felt at ease again. She physically shivered and winked at Kayla who gave her a thumbs up from across the store.
Aurora stepped back from the bustling door and leaned against the wall as she watched her clientele of mundanes and even some downworlders alike shopping in her store. She hoped she would always have this place. She hoped it would never change...
